A barcode is an optical machine-readable representation of information relating to the object to which it is attached. They cannot be read directly by humans and need scanners to get manipulated for decoding stored data. They store information in form of some horizontal and vertical black and white lines as per business requirement.

Types of Barcodes:

  • Linear barcodes:- Barcode that represents data by varying the widths and spacing of parallel lines are known as linear barcodes. Commonly used linear barcodes are Coda bar, Logmars, Telepen, UPCA, USS-93, EAN 13 etc

  • 2D Barcodes:- Barcodes that stores information in form of various geometrical figures including rectangles, dots, squares etc i.e. they store information in 2 dimension which results in storing more information in less space. Commonly used 2D barcodes are Data bar, QR Code, Maxi code, EAN 8 etc.

Major uses of barcodes are:

  1. Use barcodes to track your inventoryUsing barcodes to track your business inventory can help you in managing your products in an easiest manner. A basic inventory tracking system consists of barcode label maker software and a barcode scanner or mobile computer. All Inventory items will have barcode labels, so when you remove an item from stock, you just scan the barcode to reduce the available count in your inventory tracking software,
  2. Add barcode tags to your assets–  Any business, no matter how large or small, has IT assets and fixed assets. This can include items like PC, laptops, projectors, software, and tools. You can implement barcode tracing system for monitoring your company assets that result into improved accountability and easier audits.
  3. Use barcodes in return mail–  If your organization sell products that require registration, add a barcode to the return-mail registration postcard that matches the product’s serial number, and then you can instantly track which serial numbers are registered, and which aren’t.
  4. Include barcodes in a mail merge–  If your company is hosting an annual meet, you can add barcodes to an Invitation card so you can track who has responded without wasting much time in translating anyone’s handwriting.
  5. Add barcodes to invoices–  If your company is sending out transaction invoices for any business product, Add a barcode that represents the customer number or the individual invoice number so when it’s returned with payment, you can easily locate the customer account or invoice number. This will prevent problems like applying payments to the incorrect customer account or invoice.

Role of Laser Printer for Barcode Production

Laser Printer

Laser printer is a printer that utilizes laser technology to print barcode images on the paper. Laser printers are often used in various industries including corporate, professional, colleges, school and other environments that require print barcode labels, tags and sticker for labeling in large quantities. You can easily print barcodes and other product related information on any type of primary or secondary packaging with laser printers.

What can you print

  • Print product barcodes in linear and 2D codes seamlessly on any type of product using barcode maker software
  • Print labels for primary packaging like glass, plastic, aluminum and paper
  • Print barcode for secondary packaging like batch boxes, bottle pouches, carton boxes
  • Print high resolution codes for irregular or curved surfaces

Print Barcode

Laser printer parts and functioning :-

Receiving Data: Firstly laser printer needs to receive the data in barcode text or picture format from computer system, this process is control by printer controller that is the laser printer’s main on board computer. Once the data is received and buffered the printing process starts. In the printing process, data receiving speed and printing speed are different, therefore laser printer stores received data before printing.

Charging drum: Toner cartridge consists of aluminum cylinder coated with photosensitive material, fresh toner tank and waste toner collection tank. Once the data is received, drum is charged with high negative voltage through the charge corona wire placed at the top of the drum in toner cartridge.

Exposing drum: Received data is fed to the laser diodes or LED’s to illuminate. These light rays which is same as the received character, is written on the charged drum, and there by negative charge is neutralized in the drum surface. When the drum rotates and come closer to the toner container, exposed areas attracts the negatively charges toner particles thereby forming visible image in the drum surface.

Paper feed: Once the drum is ready with printable data, Paper pick-up roller assembly works to pick up barcode paper. Then paper is fed in between highly charged transfer roller and drum unit. Transfer roller charge pulls the toner particle in the drum unit which sticks to the paper there by image is transferred to the paper.

Fusing: Since the barcode image or data in the paper is erasable, paper is fed in to fusing unit. Fusing or fuser unit has two rollers, Heat roller attains maximum temperature using halogen lamp and another roller applies pressure when the paper is fed in between them. Due to high temperature in the heat roller toner and glue particles in the paper melts and sticks to the paper and the image becomes permanent.

Discharge: To print the next received data, drum must be cleaned to remove any traces of previous pages. Rubber blade wipes the excess toner from the drum, and then discharge lamp is used to expose and clean the drum by neutralizing residual electrical charges on it. A grounded discharge material touches the paper to remove electro static charges when paper exit from printer.

How Barcode Scanner Works

Scanning Barcode

Barcode is a machine-readable code in the form of numbers and a pattern of parallel lines of varying widths, printed on a commodity and used especially for inventory control and management. Barcodes are categorized in two categories as per the storage capacity and font standards:

1. Linear Barcode: Linear Barcode encodes data only in one dimension . Data is encoded in the widths of the bars and spaces and no data is encoded in the lengths of the bars. They can hold less than 85 characters and creates a wide barcode. Ex- Code128, Code 39, UPC, Databar, LOGMARS, Telepan etc

2. 2D Barcode: Two-dimensional (2D) barcodes have patterns of squares, dots and rectangle. While maintaining a fairly small size, these barcode hold much more data than linear barcodes. A 2D barcode is a graphical image that stores information both horizontally as one-dimensional barcodes do and vertically too. Ex- Data Matrix, QR Code, Aztec, PDF417, Maxicode, QR code etc

Barcodes are to be read by Barcode scanner and generated code is decoded by the computer to fetch the stored information over barcodes. This information is then used for various inventory management purposes in various industries like retail, manufacturing, postal, banking, healthcare, library etc.

Functioning of Barcode Scanner: Barcode reader/scanner is an electronic device for reading printed barcodes. Basically, there are 3 functional parts to the barcode scanner, the illumination system, the sensor / converter and the decoder:

1. Illumination System: The illumination system is the method by which the bars and spaces on the barcode are illuminated. There are a variety of illumination systems commonly used in barcode scanners:

Single Point LED: This type of technology is used in barcode wand where illumination of the barcode comes from either a single or pair of LED’s and is focused through a single ball-type opening. This technology requires the ball to physically touch the barcode being scanned.

Linear Multiple LED: It is the expansion of Single Point LED which used multiple LEDs in a line to give the ability to light the entire width of the barcode. They are commonly used in CCD Scanner and Linear Imagers.

LED Imager: They are similar to a CCD device with a couple of major changes. The linear imagers increase the amount of illumination with the use of high light LEDs along with the more sensitive photocells.

2. Sensor and Converter: A photo detector senses the reflected light and generates an analog signal with varying voltage. The voltage fluctuates based on whether the sensor sees the reflected light from the white spaces because the black bars absorb the red light. The technology used in the sensor can vary depending on the illumination method. The output is always the same – an analog voltage wave form with peaks for the white spaces, and troughs for the black spaces in the barcode. In both cases, this analog signal is sent to the converter. The converter changes the analog signal to a digital signal. This signal is the digital representation of what the sensor detected from the reflected light. Now that the barcode scanner has a digital signal, the signal is transferred to the barcode scanner decoder.

3. Decoder: The decoder provides a variety of functions. It analyzes the digital signal from sensor and tests if the barcode can be interpreted properly. Once the barcode is proven valid, it will find a match for its symbologies and then begin to test the digital signal for conformance with the symbology format of the barcode. During this process the signal gets converted from a digital signal into ASCII text. The decoder then checks the text formatting rules it has been programmed with and sends it to your Computer.
